Arch Filly Second in Junior Champion Stakes
COUNTESS SEAGRAPE
, the 2-year-old daughter of ARCH who finished third in her racing debut, skipped her maiden condition in her second start and went straight into stakes competition in the $60,000 Junior Champion Stakes going one mile over the fast main track at Monmouth Park.
Fourth early, she challenged for the lead at the top of the stretch and although she couldn't keep pace with the more experience winner, she was more than two lengths clear of the third place finisher.

July 24, 2008:
GLORIA GOODBODY
got up in the final jump to win the 8th race at Del Mar, a one mile maiden special weight over the Polytrack at Del Mar.

The 3-year-old daughter of ARCH saved ground in fifth for the first five furlongs. She moved out around the final turn and was in the five path at the top of the stretch. She dug in and went after the frontrunners. The two in front didn't give in easily and she used every inch of the stretch to get her nose down on the wire.

The bay gelding drew closer rounding the turn and at the top of the stretch he switched out to the middle of the track to launch his bid. LATTICE WINS THE G3 LOUISVILLE HANDICAP!
Courtesy of Churchill Downs
by Darren Rogers
Jockey Robby Albarado capped a four-win day with a hedge-skimming victory aboard LATTICE in Saturday’s $170,100 Louisville Handicap (Grade III) at Churchill Downs. Conditioned by Al Stall Jr., the 4-year-old colt beat 34-1 outsider Transduction Gold by three-quarters of length en route to his second career graded stakes win.

LATTICE, bred in Kentucky by his owners Claiborne Farm and Adele Dilschneider, ran 1 ½ miles over a “firm” turf course in 2:31.13 for his fourth victory in nine starts. The $99,134 winner’s share of the purse jumped his career earnings to $345,233.

Last summer, LATTICE took the Grade II American Derby at Arlington Park.
“This horse is growing up,” said Albarado, who notched his third stakes win of the Spring Meet. “I rode him all last year and I felt like I always had to shove on him and get him some position. I had to make him do things, but we thought a lot of him. This year he’s taking himself into the race and he’s running.”

Sent off as the 5-2 second betting choice in the field of 11 older horses, LATTICE tracked pacesetter Transduction Gold from the inside through dawdling fractions of :26.25 for the first quarter mile, :52.08 for the half, 1:17.21 for three-quarters of a mile and 1:42.38 for one mile. LATTICE, in close pursuit the entire way, began to vie for the lead midway through the final turn, slipped through an opening along the inside and kicked on gamely for the victory.

“There was an obvious question with the third turn and the trip, but I figured that if he stayed the trip he was certainly competitive with this group. And he did,” said 46-year-old Stall, who collected his fourth Churchill Downs stakes win and first since the 2003 Edgewood with Forest Shadows. “It might be a new road to go down, these staying races. It’s kind of exciting. It’s all new to me, that’s for sure. But I’m looking forward to trying to plot out a little program for him.”

LATTICE, a son of ARCH out of the Rahy mare Lateral, returned $7.40, $4.60 and $4.20. Tranduction Gold paid $23.80 and $13. Birdbirdistheword returned $13.20.

ARCHOMAN
didn't let a lack of lead change through the stretch keep him out of the winner's circle after the 7th race at Laurel Park, a seven furlong allowance over the fast main track.

The 5-year-old son of ARCH settled a half-dozen lengths off the leaders down the backstretch. Making a sweeping move around the turn, he moved into contention at the top stretch. Making up five lengths before the wire despite being on the wrong lead, he got up in the final strides to win by a neck.

With his last two starts moved off the lawn, RADIUS had been plying his trade over the main track and despite in not being his preferred surface, he was second last out. The 3-year-old ARCH colt settled into a ground saving trip along the inside. Around the final turn he continued to make progress and was ready to pounce at the top of the stretch. He had to switch to the outside to make his run and he came with a rush to get to the wire a head best.

March 1, 2008:
ABSOLUTELY CINDY BEATS THE BOYS IN THE BATTAGLIA
ABSOLUTELY CINDY
swept around the final turn and right into the Turfway Park history books Saturday, becoming the first filly to win the John Battaglia Memorial Stakes.

Dead last of 11 down the backstretch, ABSOLUTELY CINDY powered six-wide around the final turn in an explosive closing charge that left Your Round second by 1 3/4 lengths. Dixie Decision closed to finish third, another 6 1/2 lengths behind.

"I went really wide because I didn't want to get her in traffic, and I knew I had plenty of horse," said winning jockey Orlando Mojica.

Describing the filly's last race, a sixth-place finish behind undefeated champion Indian Blessing in the Grade III Silverbulletday, owner/trainer Keith Kinmon said, "We had shipped her to Fair Grounds, and Indian Blessing was in the race. [Jockey] Julien [Leparoux] got a little worried about speed carrying and made her lay close, and she stopped real bad. He realized it and wrapped up on her, didn't try to push her.

"I told Orlando, 'Do not change her running style. This filly wants to come from the clouds.'"

Mr. Harry set the pace as expected, clocking :23.60, :45.78, and 1:11.35 before a steadily advancing Your Round passed him heading into the stretch. The race appeared to belong to the new leader, but ABSOLUTELY CINDY left absolutely no doubt of the outcome once she straightened for the stretch drive. She finished the 1 1/16-mile Battaglia Memorial in 1:44.69. Kinmon had more faith in his filly than did the bettors, who sent her off at 19.80-1. She paid $41.60, $13.80, and $6.60.

Kinmon also bred ABSOLUTELY CINDY, a hometown favorite who trains at Turfway. A Kentucky-bred by ARCH out of Ms. Boucheron, the 3-year-old filly now has 3 wins, 2 seconds, and 3 thirds from 10 starts for career earnings of $163,374. Asked whether he would bring her back on Lane’s End Stakes day, either for the headline race or the Grade III Bourbonette for fillies, Kinmon indicated she next would start in the Grade I Ashland at Keeneland.

Big Glen, winner of the WEBN, had to steady before finding room to split horses and finished fourth. Briarwood Circle, the 5-2 favorite, never got into the race and finished last.

Final order of finish was ABSOLUTELY CINDY, Your Round, Dixie Decision, Big Glen, Halo's King, Mr. Harry, Beneficiary, Cherokee Triangle, Best Buddy, Instill, and Briarwood Circle.

The Battaglia Memorial is the last of three local preps for the Grade II Lane's End Stakes, which runs March 22. The race is named for John Battaglia, general manager of Turfway when it was known as Latonia. Battaglia envisioned and developed the race that has become the Lane’s End Stakes.

He closed an enourmous amount of ground going into and around the final turn and he joined several horses at the top of the stretch all looking for the win. Hooking up to the wire, CURVATURE gamely prevailed in the last few jumps to win by a long nose.

A homebred racing for Claiborne Farm and Adele B. Dilschneider, CURVATURE is out of the multiple stakes-placed Seeking the Gold mare, Liable. Trained by Albert Stall, Jr., he has won or placed in six of his eight career starts.

He caught the leaders inside the sixteenth pole and went on to win by a length and one-quarter.

ABSOLUTELY CINDY broke her maiden going nine furlongs over the Polytrack at Keeneland last time out,  and she had her share of trouble to get past this time. Bobbling at the break, she was at the back of the pack and raced four wide around the first turn and down the back stretch. With a quarter mile left to run, she was still in tenth place and jockey Larry Melancon had to guide her to eight path to mount her challenge. Once in the clear, she exploded with an impressive closing kick and gobbled up ground with every stride. She swept past the leaders in the last few jumps to win by one length.

ARCH FILLY WINS MISS AMERICA STAKES!
Courtesy of Golden Gate Fields

NORTH BEACH held off 3-to-2 favorite Round Trip Flight through the stretch and won the $75,000 Miss America Stakes by 1 1/2 lengths Sunday at Golden Gate Fields.

The Miss America, a 1 1/8-mile race for fillies and mares, was scheduled to be run on the turf, however, the feature was moved to GGF’s new Tapeta racing surface after steady rains Saturday and early Sunday morning soaked the Lakeside Turf Course.

NORTH BEACH, trained by O. J. Jauregui and ridden by Luis Contreras, moved to the lead on the second turn and continued on strongly to the wire.  Round Trip Flight, with Russell Baze aboard, took second by 3 1/2 lengths over Grat.  Higher Love, the early pacesetter, finished fourth.

The Miss America marked the first stakes win for NORTH BEACH, a 4-year-old filly owned by Ann Marie Farm, and the first U.S. stakes victory for jockey Contreras, who came to Northern California from Mexico last February.

"I’m excited,” said Contreras, who has won numerous stakes in his native Mexico.  “She’s a nice filly.  I felt confident the whole way.  I wasn’t worried about anyone catching her [in the stretch] because she was running so strong.”

Jauregui said the change in surfaces for the Miss America didn’t concern him. “I was confident going turf or dirt,” said Jauregui.  “This filly’s getting better every time.  When she worked [five furlongs] on the Tapeta the other day [Nov. 3], I got her in 1:01 3/5, so I knew she could handle the track.  I’m going to try to keep her on turf as much as I can.”

NORTH BEACH paid $6.00 after recording her fourth victory in eight career starts.  A Kentucky-bred daughter of ARCH, NORTH BEACH earned $45,000 for the Miss America win.

Jauregui said the Grade 2 $150,000 Dahlia Handicap, a 1 1/16-mile turf race for fillies and mares at Hollywood Park on Dec. 16, would likely be the next target for NORTH BEACH.

Rome touts Thoroughbred ownership on The Jungle
by Frank Angst

The enthusiasm poured through the radio on Monday, when, despite a busy sports weekend, nationally syndicated sports talk host Jim Rome talked about Thoroughbred ownership on his show.

As part of Little Red Feather Racing, Rome owns part of WING FORWARD, who won his North American racing debut in dramatic fashion on Saturday. The ARCH three-year-old colt rallied from last in a field of 12 to win a one-mile allowance race by a neck on the turf at Oak Tree at Santa Anita Park.

“It was one of the most amazing experiences I’ve ever had,” Rome told his listeners.

Rome, who has offered more horse racing coverage on his radio show than most national hosts, said he has considered horse ownership for years. Billy Koch, managing partner of Little Red Feather, approached Rome about WING FORWARD and the host of “The Jungle” took the plunge.

“It’s something I’ve always wanted to do,” Rome said. “I talked it over with my wife, Janet, and she was enthusiastic about doing this.”

Koch joined Rome on the show and the two talked about the joys of winning a Thoroughbred race.

“Because it’s so tough to win, anytime you win it’s exciting,” said Koch, whose Little Red Feather Racing campaigned 2004 Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1) winner Singletary. “You get that feeling every single time.”

Rome said he thoroughly enjoyed the day of racing, especially walking into the paddock, meeting the other syndicate owners, trainer Mike Puype, and jockey Jose Valdivia Jr. He admitted to having some doubts when WING FORWARD raced last through a half-mile in :48.05.

“In that first half-mile I was on my cell phone trying to get a hold of the bank to put a stop payment on that check,” Rome joked.

The host also kidded Koch about taking things to another level, mentioning the Kentucky Derby presented by Yum Brands (G1).

“I don’t want to sound like a pig, but now that we have this horse, can you get me a Derby winner? Heck, forget that, get me a Triple Crown winner,” Rome said.

Rome declared WING FORWARD , The Jungle Horse, and promised to update listeners on his progress. Always a fan of horse racing, Rome has joked over the years about it being more of a gambling venture than a sport. His mind has changed.

“I really had an epiphany on Saturday,” Rome said. “It’s such a great experience. I was all fired up.”

Koch credited Puype with discovering the horse in Argentina, where he finished second in his debut and won his second start. He also credited Puype’s patience as a key for WING FORWARD's successful North American debut.

In the first of the big Guineas trials in Europe, undefeated 3-year-old ARCH filly ARCH SWING kept her record perfect when she captured Saturday’s 1000 Guineas Trial (G3) at Leopardstown going seven furlongs.

The 2006 Weld Park S. (G3) heroine was making her first start of the year and third lifetime. The even-money favorite swept to the lead about a furlong out, then outfinished her John Oxx-stablemate Four Sins in a thrilling run to the wire. She remains one of the top choices for the Stan James 1000 Guineas at Newmarket next month.

"I thought she was pretty fit but she got a bit tired towards the finish," said Oxx to the Racing Post.  "She is a big, masculine filly who takes plenty of work and she did come on a lot from her first run last season. Hopefully, she will do the same this year. They did a good job watering the track and the ground is genuinely good, though Mick (Kinane) thought that it was probably just a bit slow for this filly. She likes it fast."
