AIMING TO BECOME KING OF THE TURF SPRINTERS
Courtesy of the
Daily Racing Form
By JAY PRIVMAN
In two full seasons on the racetrack, SMART ENOUGH (HORSE CHESTNUT) has established himself as arguably one of the nation's elite turf sprinters. This year, he'll be given the opportunity to settle that argument.

Turf sprinters, for the first time, will have a Breeders' Cup championship race all their own. That race at Santa Anita in October is the long-range goal for SMART ENOUGH, whose 2008 campaign is scheduled to begin on Sunday in the Grade 3, $125,000 Shakertown Stakes here at Keeneland.

"I would certainly hope to be in the Breeders' Cup," SMART ENOUGH's trainer, John R.S. Fisher, said Friday morning from the Fair Hill training center in Maryland, where he is based. "That would be the plan. He's certainly the best horse I've ever trained."

SMART ENOUGH, 5, has won 10 of 15 starts, all on turf, and has finished out of the money just once, when he lost a shoe during a race at Monmouth. He has won 8 of 10 sprints at distances ranging from five to six furlongs. The Shakertown, at 5 1/2 furlongs, is right in his wheelhouse.

As he has done the past two years, Fisher gave SMART ENOUGH a vacation over the winter after racing him in the five-furlong Cherokee Run Stakes at Churchill Downs in November. He pointed him to a return when the weather improved, but recent wet weather at Keeneland gave Fisher some concern.

"I'm going to run if the race is on grass, but if it's taken off the grass, he won't run," Fisher said. "He trains on a synthetic surface, but I don't want to begin the season running him for the first time on Polytrack."

SMART ENOUGH landed post 2 in the Shakertown, which drew 13 entrants, including one also-eligible.

SMART ENOUGH WINS CHEROKEE RUN HANDICAP AT CHURCHILL DOWNS!
Courtesty of
Churchill Downs

by John Asher
Favored SMART ENOUGH, ridden by Chris DeCarlo, rallied from just off the pace to grab the lead in the stretch and quickly drew away for 3 1/4-length victory over Chihulykee in the 4th running of the $115,300 Cherokee Run Handicap for 3-year-olds and up at five furlongs on turf on Sunday at Churchill Downs.

The runner-up in the Cherokee Run in 2006, SMART ENOUGH made amends as he covered the distance in :56.53 and paid $5.20, $3 and $2.40. Chihulykee, who held well for second after he fought for the early lead under jockey Julien Leparoux, paid $5.40 and $3.40. Fort Prado, who saw a two-race winning streak snapped under Rene Douglas, edged Atticus Kristy for third and paid $4.20.

SMART ENOUGH, a Maryland-based gelding by HORSE CHESTNUT owned by Edith R. Dixon, improved his career record to 10-1-3 in 15 races and the winner’s purse of $69,342 raised his lifetime earnings to $647,543. The Cherokee Run victory was his fifth in seven races in 2007. Trained by John R. S Fisher, SMART ENOUGH came into the race at Churchill Downs off a third-place run as the favorite in the $500,000 Nearctic (Grade II) at Woodbine.

“It was very impressive and very sweet since he ran second in this race last year,” said Fisher. “I had this race targeted after the race at Woodbine. That was the big race and we got beat, but the horse came back like he didn’t lose any weight at all on the trip to Woodbine. He was bucking and squealing and playing and feeling good and I thought I ought to take a shot.”

Man of Danger broke sharply and was more than a length clear just a few strides out of the starting gate, but he was quickly engaged by Chihulykee and that pair dueled head-and-head through early fractions of :22.34 and :44.91. DeCarlo had SMART ENOUGH just off the leaders in third, but the winner quickly swept to the front in upper stretch and instantly drew clear. Chihulykee briefly stuck his head in front in the stretch, but offered no resistance when SMART ENOUGH swept past. Fort Prado and Atticus Kristy from sixth and seventh, respectively, but never threatened the winner and finished a neck apart in third and fourth, a length behind the runner-up.

“It was actually very easy,” said DeCarlo, who notched his first stakes victory at Churchill Downs. “He broke well and sat off the two speed horses, which was the plan, and when I called on him, he took off.”

More Great Values...
I've written about a lot of stallions over the past couple of months, but there are more horses I reckon are very good value for 2007 who haven't yet had a mention.

HORSE CHESTNUT (Claiborne, $5,000:  A four-time Group1 winner, and eight-for-nine in his native South Africa by the impeccably bred Fort Wood (Sadler's Wells--Fall
Aspen), HORSE CHESTNUT's one and only start in the U.S. resulted in a win in the GIII Broward H., a Donn prep, on the dirt, running a Beyer 110. His oldest foals were five-year-olds of 2006. Through the end of last year, he had an A Runner Index of 1.44, was right around average for B and C Runners, for a 1.19 ABC Runner Index.....

Claiborne has dropped his fee to $5,000 for this year. I'd call that somewhere between 'very attractively priced' and 'dirt cheap.'
