It was MEDITATIONS’ second victory in three career starts and her first attempt around two turns. The Three Ring Stakes is 1 1/16 miles on the main track and the Kentucky bred daughter of OUT OF PLACE covered the distance in 1:47.63.

Ralph Ziadie trains MEDITATIONS for Mrs. Bassett, wife of James E. “Ted” Bassett III, who is currently a member and trustee of Breeders’ Cup Limited and a trustee and member of the board of directors at Keeneland.

“She’s been a really nice filly from the beginning," said Ziade. "I wasn’t really concerned about the distance. She trained like she’d run forever. She won’t run again until next year at Gulfstream. I’ve had a horse for Mrs. Bassett, usually one at a time, for maybe 10 years.”

“This filly is something special," said winning rider Rene Douglas. "I can’t say enough about her to describe how good I think she is. She is a true professional. All the way around the track I felt like we were going to win as easily as we did.”

PALACE PIER WINS ONTARIO LASSIE

Courtesy of
Woodbine News N' Notes
TORONTO, December 2 – Jockey Todd Kabel captured his meet-leading 16th stakes score, guiding  PALACE PIER to an upset score in Saturday's $150,000 Ontario Lassie Stakes at Woodbine.

PALACE PIER, a two-year-old daughter of OUT OF PLACE, trained by Darwin Banach, made her second stakes effort a winning one, crossing the wire three-quarters of a length in front of odds-on favourite Catch the Thrill, in 1:46.69 for 1 1/16-miles, over the Polytrack.

The chestnut filly came into the race off a maiden-breaking score, a 1 ¼-length winner at 1 1/16-miles on November 4.

Bred and owned by Bill Sorokolit, she finished fourth on the grass in her career bow on August 20. Her first test on the Toronto oval’s Polytrack resulted in a third-place finish on September 30.

It was PALACE PIER who seized the lead from the outset, taking the field through an opening quarter-mile in :24.01 and a half in :47.62.

Kabel, who could be in line for his sixth Sovereign Award and fourth straight as Canada’s top rider, kept the Ontario-bred relaxed through three-quarters in 1:12.13, before the duo fended off a late run from Princess Elizabeth Stakes champion Catch the Thrill. Love You Crazy held for third.

“I was hoping for an off-the-pace trip today,” said Kabel. “The more I looked at the race, I said, ‘I’m going to jump her out of there, put her there and try and steal it.’ That’s exactly what we did today.”

Banach collected his first Ontario Lassie win. “It’s fortunate the way it worked out. We discussed going straight to the stake (or) going to the non-winners of two (allowance race). We entered in the non-winners of two, but it didn’t fill. We had second plans and they worked out perfectly.”

BETTY GARR, a 3-year-old daughter of OUT OF PLACE finished third in the $50,000 San Jacinto Stakes going a mile and one-sixteenth on the turf at Sam Houston Park.
