PYRO POWERS CLEAR IN NORTHERN DANCER STAKES-G3!
by Joe Nevills
Grade 2 winner PYRO reestablished his status as one of the elite colts in the three-year-old division as he powered clear in the stretch to win the $190,925 Northern Dancer Stakes (G3) by 1 3/4 lengths on Saturday at Churchill Downs.

The PULPIT colt was rated in third by jockey Shaun Bridgmohan behind dueling pacesetters Texas Wildcatter and My Pal Charlie. PYRO rallied three wide on the final turn and drove clear of the pacesetters with about a furlong to go under steady handling by Bridgmohan. PYRO completed 1 1/16 miles in 1:43.53 on a track rated as fast.

"He was always traveling good down the backside," Bridgmohan said. "He was just nice and relaxed and enjoying himself out there."

Runner-up My Pal Charlie finished 2 ¼ lengths ahead of Grade 3 winner Visionaire. Illinois Derby (G2) winner and 11-to-10 favorite Recapturetheglory was blocked behind traffic in the stretch and finished fourth.

CHURCH SERVICE WINS G3 DALLAS TURF CUP!
Robert Tjosvold’s CHURCH SERVICE (PULPIT), trained by Mike Mitchell, produced a strong stretch rally to capture the Grade 3 $200,000 Dallas Turf Cup on Monday at Lone Star Park.

Ridden by Brice Blanc, CHURCH SERVICE bided his time at the back of the pack behind moderate opening fractions of :25.29, :50.91, and 1:15.04 before launching a wide run two furlongs from home. With time running out approaching the finish, CHURCH SERVICE dug in determinedly to catch the Bobby Frankel-trained Storm Military in the final jump. CHURCH SERVICE covered the one-mile-and-an-eighth distance in 1:50.54.  Red Rock Creek rallied along the rail to finish one and a quarter lengths back in third.

“I’ve ridden him the past and it’s his thing to come from out of it, and he finished up very strong today,” said winning jockey Brince Blanc. “A horse like this with a strong turn of foot can overcome a slow early pace, and I was really confident that he could out kick them.”

In winning the Dallas Turf Cup, CHURCH SERVICE earned his first graded stakes victory and recorded his fourth victory from 21 career starts. The $120,000 winners share of the purse increased Church Service’s lifetime earnings to $310,060.

RUTHERIENNE
was one of the best 3-year-old turf fillies of 2007 but had never been tried outside her division. Thrown to the older wolves Saturday when making her 4-year-old debut, the PULPIT filly responded with a spectacular effort, driving through a narrow opening in deep stretch to register a neck victory over longshot Stormy West in a hotly contested 20th running of the Grade 2 Jenny Wiley Stakes on the Blue Grass Stakes undercard at Keeneland.

With Garrett Gomez riding for trainer Christophe Clement, RUTHERIENNE bided her time near the rear of a tightly packed field and had just one rival beaten at the quarter pole. But as the front-runners began to tire and the field bunched even closer, she split rivals while launching a ferocious surge, finishing 1 1/16 miles in 1:44.76 over a firm turf course. Stormy West, a 23-1 shot under Kent Desormeaux, finished a head in front of late-running Lady of Venice. Less than six lengths separated the entire field.

RUTHERIENNE, bred and owned in Kentucky by Virginia Kraft Payson, returned $14 as fourth choice in a field of 10.

Gomez said he was "eyeing a spot" between Candy Ball and Roshani, who had led most of the way, "and I was hoping they'd give me some room to get through there. They did. The filly found daylight and sprinted on home."

Virtually every starter took their best shot in the Jenny Wiley. Precious Kitten, the 5-2 favorite, and Bit of Whimsy, the 7-2 second choice, both were prominently placed but failed to deliver their best when finishing fifth and sixth, respectively. Sealy Hill, the 2007 Horse of the Year in Canada, neared the lead in midstretch before fading to finish last.

RUTHERIENNE now has won 9 of 11 career starts. Last year, she was defeated only in the Appalachian at Keeneland and the Garden City at Belmont while winning five graded stakes, including the Grade 1 Del Mar Oaks.

"That's what good horses do - they win," Clement said.

The Gamely at Hollywood or the Just a Game at Belmont are possible next starts for RUTHERIENNE, he added.

RUTHERIENNE earned $124,000 from a total purse of $200,000, lifting her career bankroll to $744,975.

PYRO PROVES THE REAL DEAL IN GII LOUISIANA DERBY
Odds-on favorite PYRO, solidifying his status among the nation’s top 3-year-olds, took command in midstretch to capture the $600,000 Grade II Louisiana Derby Saturday at Fair Grounds.

Unhurried early, PYRO unleashed his patented late run once again in the highlight of the New Orleans racing season, just as he had four weeks earlier in Fair Grounds’ Grade III Risen Star Stakes.

PYRO returned $3.60, $2.80 and $2.20 while touring the 1 1/16-mile distance in 1:44.44. The son of PULPIT won by three lengths and became an equine millionaire, increasing his earnings to $1,056,718 with his third victory from six lifetime starts.

“A spot opened for him on the straightaway and he went about his business,” said winning jockey Shaun Bridgmohan of the facile score.

Trainer Steve Asmussen’s post race summary was equally to the point.

“It looks like he’s right on target,” said Asmussen, winningest trainer in North America in number of wins last season and far in front on his way to a seventh training title at Fair Grounds.

The “target,” of course, is the Kentucky Derby eight weeks away as well as the rest of the Triple Crown.

What was a surprise was the Louisiana Derby runner-up, lightly-regarded My Pal Charlie, who ran for a $50,000 claiming price only two starts ago but made the pace with fractions of :24.10 and :48.07. He continued willingly late to save the place while no match for the winner.

“We were the longest shot on the board,” said My Pal Charlie’s French-born jockey Julien Leparoux. “If he relaxes a little more I think he can go a little farther, but we got beat by a monster today.”

Previously undefeated Yankee Bravo, running over a traditional dirt surface for the first time in his career, finished third, a half-length behind My Pal Charlie.

Behind Yankee Bravo were Blackberry Road, Stevil, Tale of Ekati, Majestic Warrior, J Be K, and Unbridled Vicar.

She blew past the pacesetter and opened up as much the best to win by more than five lengths.

BRANDYWINE SUMMIT is a Christianna Stables LLC homebred and she is trained by John Servis. She is the first foal from the stakes-placed Dixieland Band mare, Beat Your Feet.

BSHARPSONATA REMAINS PERFECT IN 2008!
Cloverleaf Farm II’s 3-year-old filly BSHARPSONATA kept her winter-season record perfect, rallying from off the pace to capture Sunday’s $150,000 Davona Dale Stakes (G2) at Gulfstream Park, her fourth consecutive stakes victory and third since arriving in South Florida.

Trained by Maryland-based horseman Tim Salzman, BSHARPSONATA is a Florida homebred daughter of PULPIT who had won the Selima Stakes at Laurel Park in late November, the Tropical Park Oaks at Calder on New Year’s Day and the Forward Gal Stakes (G2) last out at Gulfstream on Feb. 9 in her last three starts.

Regular jockey Eric Camacho let the winner settle off the pace along the rail down the backstretch before rallying to the lead in the final furlong to score by two lengths over Zabeel Racing International’s 7-10 favorite Game Face in the field of six 3-year-old fillies. Robbies and Emmas Stable’s Robbies Gal finished third, a half-length behind the runner-up. Bsharpsonata was timed in 1:37:97 for the mile over a ‘fast’ track and paid $7.60 for $2 to win.

“I thought that Edgar’s (Prado) horse (American County) would go farther, but she stopped at the 3/8 pole,  and then I saw Game Face make her move and I got worried," said Camacho. "Once I finally made my move, I don’t think Johnny (Velasquez) was expecting me.  I snuck up on him.  I had to split horses.  I’ve been inside, outside and have had to split horses with this filly; she can do anything.  Last time she won I said she could run on anything: mud, turf, pavement; you can add rocks to that now.  Everyone said that her Beyers were low at Delaware Park and no one respected her today.  She proved them wrong.  I think she may go to the Ashland from here, but they’ll take her back to the barn and see how she comes back after this race.  I’ll be on her wherever she goes next.”

“I was really worried all the way down the backside," said Salzman."She was shut off down inside behind horses, but the jock was so patient and rode just a tremendous race on her to wait until he got clear. He rides her with total confidence. Distance is no problem for her. He mama (Apasionata Sonata) won at a mile-and-a-half. We’ll see how she comes out of it, but if she’s okay, we’ll take her on to Keeneland for the Ashland (Stakes (G1) on Apr. 5).”

BSHARPSONATA has won six of her nine career starts and she has earned $373,410.

February 27, 2008:

Hooking up with another for the length of the stretch, PARADING dug in, took the lead passing the eighth pole and would not give that lead up, inching away to win by a neck.

PARADING has won or placed in nine of his twelve career starts and he has earned $161,006. A homebred racing for the Phipps Stable and he is trained by Shug McGaughey. He is out of the Storm Cat mare, On Parade.

BSHARPSONATA WINS G2 FORWARD GAL STAKES!
Courtesty of Gulfstream Park

After a desperate head-to-head duel in the stretch of Saturday’s $150,000 Forward Gal Stakes (G2) at Gulfstream Park, CloverLeaf Farm’s homebred filly BSHARPSONATA won a nose decision over Gary and Mary West’s even-money favorite Keep the Peace, denying jockey Edgar Prado’s bid to post career win 6,000 on the latter in the 3-year-old filly test.

Keep the Peace took command early in the seven-furlong event run over a ‘sloppy’ track and appeared in control until jockey Eric Camacho brought BSHARPSONATA up the rail to challenge nearing the stretch. Philip Birsch’s Melissa Jo finished third in the field of seven, 3¼ lengths behind the top two.

“That was a hell of a stretch run," said Camacho. "I didn’t want to get stuck on the rail because it’s been dead all day.  But I played the cards I was dealt.  Edgar (Prado) put pressure on me when he saw me on the rail.  My filly was game until the end.  I put my stick away and she gave me all she had.  I knew I had it at the wire.  Edgar congratulated me.  He’s a real class act. This is my fifth start on her.  She’s versatile.  She can run on anything- turf, dirt, mud, pavement; whatever they throw at her she can handle.  Not many horses can do that.  She’s very special.”

We were worried before the race that there wouldn’t be any other speed to go with her (Keep the Peace), but fortunately there was enough," said winning trainer Tim Salzman. "She’s amazing. She’s handled everything we’ve asked…short, long…turf, dirt…and now slop. We were more or less forced into this spot with no races for 3-year-old fillies here on turf, but we did want to try her back on the dirt at some point and this leaves us a lot more options. With a 3-year-old at this time of year, you have to think about the (Kentucky Oaks). Now we just have to look at how to get there. Certainly, the Bonnie Miss here (Mar. 29) will be a race we’ll consider.”

BSHARPSONATA is a Florida-bred by PULPIT trained by Maryland-based horseman Tim Salzman who paid $12.40 after being timed in 1:23:09. She was turning back in distance and changing surfaces after capturing the Selima Stakes at Laurel Park and Tropical Park Oaks at Calder in her last two starts going a distance on turf.

PYRO IMPRESSIVE IN G3 RISEN STAR VICTORY!
Courtesty of Fair Grounds

Winchell Thoroughbreds’ PYRO, who was 11th and last at the top of the stretch, made an explosive move in the final eighth of a mile to capture the $300,000 Grade III Risen Star Stakes, the main event of Louisiana Derby Preview Day Saturday at Fair Grounds.

Under regular rider Shaun Bridgmohan, the son of PULPIT stamped himself as the undisputed long-range choice in Fair Grounds’ Grade II Louisiana Derby next month and one of the early favorites for the Kentucky Derby on May 3.

“I just did what I was told to do, and it worked out very well for me,” said Bridgmohan.

PYRO finished two lengths ahead of stablemate Z Fortune and covered the 1 1/16 miles in 1:44.68. More impressively, press box observers clocked PYRO’s final quarter-mile in a sizzling 22 3-5 seconds. It was another three-quarters of a length back to the Michael Matz-trained Visionaire in third.

“He’s a tremendous horse,” said trainer Steve Asmussen of PYRO, who breezed in company with Horse of the Year Curlin at Fair Grounds twice in the last three weeks before making the first start of his 3-year-old campaign in the Risen Star. “How good is he? He’s good enough to do what we just watched. He accelerated home. Guess his workmate did the job, huh?”

Despite winning for only the second time in five lifetime starts, PYRO increased his career earnings to $696,718.

With PYRO near the back of the pack, Rich Young Ruler set pedestrian early fractions of :24.52 and :49.50 before fading to sixth at the wire. That made PYRO’s late surge – he was still eighth in mid-stretch – even more impressive.

February 2, 2008:
STRATOSTAR
, who visited the winner's circle on January 21, made it two straight victories in twelve days! His latest win came in the 10th race at Gulfstream Park, a mile and one-eighth allowance over the firm turf course.

The son of PULPIT stalked the pace last time out, but this time he trailed the field or was near the back for the first six furlongs. Moving to the outside to challenge coming off the turn, he closed with a rush and got up in the final strides to win by a half-length.

February 2, 2008:
PULPIT FICTION
, the 3-year-old daughter of PULPIT, won under a hand ride in the 6th race at Mountaineer Park, a maiden special weight going five and one-half furlongs over the good main track.

PULPIT FICTION let the speedier types handle the early going. Given one reminder to get going on the final turn, she caught the leaders at the top of the stretch and drew away with no other encouragement to win by more than four lengths.

PULPIT FICTION races for The Elkstone Group and she is trained by Ron Potts. Bred in Kentucky by Cherry Valley Farm, she is out of the winning Devil's Bag mare, Scope.

February 2, 2008:
PRODICAL EXTREME
was the third winner today sired by PULPIT. The 4-year-old colt flew through the stretch to win the 4th race at Sam Houston Park, a six furlong allowance over the fast main track.

PRODICAL EXTREME was back in tenth down the backstretch and he still had plenty to do at the top of the stretch. He had to move out with a furlong to run, but he uncorked a final turn of foot that blasted him past the competition and he swept past the finish line three-quarters of a length in front.

PRODICAL EXTREME races for W. Don Bennett and he is trained by Don Bennett. Bred in Elk Manor Farm, he is out of the Spectacular Bid mare, Queen's Wild.

January 21, 2008:

HURRAH races for Winning Move Stable and he is trained by Gary Contessa. Bred in Kentucky by Claiborne Farm and Adele B. Dilschneider, he is out of Northern Dancer mare, Wild Applause.

January 13, 2008:
PARADING
got a bit of deserved help from the stewards in his victory in the 7th race at Gulfstream Park, a $44,500 allowance going one mile over the turf course that was rated good.

The son of PULPIT rated off the pace in the early going but was full of run when he launched his bid at the top of the stretch. He was closing in with every stride and looked to be going on to victory, when the leader came way out and forced PARADING to take up sharply. There was not enough real estate left for PARADING to get his bid going again and he fnished a length back at the line. The first place finisher was disqualified for the interference and PARADING was put up for the win.

PARADING is a homebred racing for Phipps Stable and he is trained by Shug McGaughey. He has won or placed in seven of his ten career starts. He is the first foal from the Storm Cat mare, On Parade.

January 13, 2008:
ON THE VIRG
made his second start and his two-turn debut and he was succesful on both counts, winning the 8th race at Santa Anita, a maiden special weight going a mile and one-sixteenth over the Cushion track.

The 3-year-old PULPIT colt was three wide around the first turn and he moved up to pressue the pacesetter down the backstretch. The two fought it out until the top of the stretch, when ON THE VIRG took over for good and he went on to a two length victory.

There was a historical note to add. ON THE VIRG was the 2,000th winner for trainer Todd Pletcher. He races for the partnership of Glencrest Farm, Dapple Stable and Sassafras Racing I, LLC. He is the third foal from the stakes-placed Housebuster mare, House Virgin.

the 3-year-old daughter of PULPIT, came from off the pace with a sustained move to win the 2nd race at Sam Houston Park, a maiden special weight going one mile over the firm turf course.

WEEKEND CONNECTION saved ground around the clubhouse turn and into the backstretch with a rail skimming trip. She began to improve her position with a half-mile to wire. BSHARPSONATA WINS TROPICAL PARK OAKS!
Courtest of
CRC Publicity
CloverLeaf Farm II’s homebred 3-year-old filly BSHARPSONATA was quick to win her first stakes race of 2008 with her 1 ½ lengths victory over Alwajeeha in the $100,000 Tropical Park Oaks at Calder Race Course on New Year’s Day. Absolutely Cindy finished a length back in third.

Ridden by jockey Eric Camacho for Maryland-based trainer Tim Salzman, BSHARPSONATA tracked the early pace set by Encanto Park. On the far turn of the 1 1/16 miles turf race, the filly made her move and was in the lead at the head of the stretch. BSHARPSONATA covered the distance in 1:40.69.

“This is such a nice filly to ride because she lets you put her wherever you want to in the race," said Camacho. "Going down the backside I wanted to rate her in behind horses, but we were getting pushed to the outside and when she saw that daylight in front of her she got a bit rank. I got her settled though and coming around the last turn I just turned her loose.”

“I brought her down here (from Laurel Park in Maryland) over a week ago to acclimate and work over the course," said John Salzman, the father of BSHARPSONATAs trainer Tim Salzman . "She’s a good filly and we’re hoping she’ll be as good back on dirt as she is on turf. There really isn’t anything for her (stakes) on turf at Gulfstream, so we’re going to point her for the seven-eighths race, the Forward Gal (Feb. 9), and then the Davona Dale (Mar. 2).”

Winner of the Selima Stakes at Laurel Park last time out, BSHARPSONATA now has four victories from seven starts.

RUTHERIENNE SCORES ANOTHER GRADED STAKES WIN!
by:
CRC Publicity

Virginia Kraft Payson’s homebred Grade I winning 3-year-old filly RUTHERIENNE (PULPIT) returned to Calder, where she won her two starts last season, to win the $100,000 Frances A. Genter Stakes (G3) on Saturday, Grand Slam III day at the track.

It was a hard-fought win, with only a neck separating RUTHERIENNE from two fillies that dead-heated for the place position: Sweet Ransom and Pretoria Light. Ridden by jockey Rene Douglas for trainer Christophe Clement, RUTHERIENNE covered the seven and a half furlongs over firm turf in 1:28.16.

“One of the tricks to riding on this turf course is taking what you get and making the most of it," said winning rider Rene Douglas. "That horse (Pretoria Light) was tough to catch the way she went out on the lead. We had good position down the backside and when I stepped on the gas she went right between horses, then we had to work hard to catch the leader.”

“The way the course was playing (speed), Rene (Douglas) put her a little closer to the pace than she usually is, which might have taken a little off of her closing kick, but she got the job done," said RUTHERIENNE's trainer Christophe Clement. "She’s a very good filly and I didn’t really have her at 100 per cent (fit) for this race, but she was able to overcome that. She’ll get some time off now until April, probably coming back at Gulfstream or Keeneland. The goals after that are the Just a Game at Belmont and the Diana at Saratoga, both Grade 1s.”

December 28, 2007:

BSHARPSONATA WINS SELIMA STAKES!

Courtesy of Laurel Park
By Francis LaBelle Jr.
Cloverleaf Farm II Inc.’s BSHARPSONATA pulled off a mild upset when she scored from just off the pace in the $125,000 Selima Stakes for two-year old fillies at Laurel Park.

Trained by Tim Salzman and ridden by local journeyman Eric Camacho, BSHARPSONATA broke alertly in the 1-1/16th mile test, then settled back along the rail and tracked frontrunners Fareena and Dagger to the top of the stretch on the firm turf. At the head of the lane she accelerated between the top two to wrest command, then romped home a 1-1/4 length winner in 1:43.66. Grace of Power rallied to take second while Fareena held on to be third.

The winner, a bay daughter of PULPIT who had won the Irish Sonnet Stakes on the main track at Delaware Park in late September, paid $19.60. The 6-2 exacta returned $90.20 and the 6-2-11 triple came back $695.60.

Jockey Camacho said, “As soon as I hit the head of the lane I thought I needed a seat belt to hold on. I worked her on the turf the other day and I said she’s the real deal. I sat a perfect trip. I couldn’t have asked for a better trip. We got over from the six-hole and were able to save as much ground as you can. I went to the rail and just tried to travel behind Fareena. My idea was to wait, wait, wait, and once I hit the head of the lane, angled out and she shot out off that rail and was moving. This is a push button horse and an absolute pleasure to ride.”

In her last start, BSHARPSONATA finished fourth on a yielding turf at Monmouth Park four weeks ago.

Trainer Salzman said, “She’s pretty much handled everything we’ve asked. Today when she straightened up she just took off. We’ll see how she comes out of the race, where she’s goes next. She can handle dirt or turf. In her last race when she finished fourth after leading down the lane, she probably tired because of the soft grass. That was a little better brand of horses. There were about a lot of variables. Camacho rode her just as I wanted.”

MINI SERMON WINS G2 TOP FLIGHT HANDICAP!

Courtesy of NYRA
By Francis LaBelle Jr.
Edward P. Evans’ MINI SERMON wore down front-running Lady Marlboro with a relentless stretch drive and got a nose down at the wire Friday afternoon to win the 68th running of the Grade 2, $150,000 Top Flight Handicap, presented by Delta Airlines.

The one-mile, main track feature for fillies and mares attracted a seasoned group, but it was MINI SERMON, a three-year-old PULPIT filly that came up big for her first graded stakes victory.

After a clean start for all, Lady Marlboro and jockey Javier Castellano took the lead and set a pace of :23.38; :46.98 and 1:11.96 on the good track, while pressed by Pool Land.

MINI SERMON, meanwhile, stayed inside under jockey Eibar Coa, who then brought her three-wide to take on the front-runner in the lane. Lady Marlboro refused to quit and they battled to the wire with Mini Sermon winning the bob in 1:37.29.

“I was trying to bide my time,” Coa said. “At the three-eighths pole, I knew I had some horse, but I didn’t know how much horse. My horse was running, but the other horse wasn’t stopping. She kept digging and digging and digging and finally put a head in front.”

It was the fifth win in eight starts for MINI SERMON, who returned $15.60 to the $2 win players among the crowd of 3,196. She was partly responsible for Saturday’s Pick 6 Carryover of $118,970.

“Coming into this race, she was doing everything right,” said Seth Benzel, assistant to winning trainer Todd Pletcher. “ Eibar (Coa) put a perfect ride on her. He saved ground and let her relax. He was able to move her out, and wear them down after that. I don’t know what they are going to do with her. I certainly think she would be very useful here.”

Favored Golden Velvet was third, followed by Cindy’s Mom, Altesse, Pool Land, Lost Etiquette and Baby Bird.

November 22, 2007:
THUNDER MISSION
, the 5-year-old son of PULPIT was the third horse in the blanket finish of the $60,000 Thanksgiving Handicap going six furlongs over the fast main track at Fair Grounds.

$1.7M PULPIT FILLY AT KEENELAND NOVEMBER!
A filly by PULPIT who is the first foal from Grade 1 winner Madcap Escapade brought a final bid of $1,700,000, the top price for a weanling at the opening session of the 2007 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale!

The first foal from her dam, the bay filly was purchased by Southern Equine Stable, who alread had an ownership interest in the filly as well as her dam.

"Our game plan was to keep her and sell her as a yearling, but John (Sikura) thought we'd get a yearling price for her here and that's pretty much what happened, Eric Guillot of Southern Equine commented. "She's so phenomenal looking. She's got better front legs than the average mare here. I remember watching her mom race on TV and she looked like she was a different species."

"She literally stood out in the post parade, continued Guillot. "I'd like to keep her under my care so that the filly gets every chance to enhance her mare's value as a future asset.

The filly may be offered for resale, but that is not set in stone.

"Let's see how she grows up and let's see how the market looks," Guillot said. "You don't have to make those kinds of decisions today. She looks like the kind you turn around and if PULPIT has another year like he had this year and as good as this filly looks, she ought to shine as a yearling. But if she grows up and I like her, I'll keep and race her."

NAMASTE'S WISH WINS MISS GRILLO STAKES AT BELMONT

Courtesy of Daily Racing Form
By DAVID GRENING

In Prussian (Danzig), trainer Bill Mott already has one of the leading contenders for the new $1 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf. In NAMASTE'S WISH, the daughter of PULPIT, he may have one of Prussian's major challengers.

NAMASTE'S WISH, a full sister to Grade 1 dirt winner Purge, may have earned a spot in the Juvenile Turf at Monmouth Park on Oct. 26 with a three-quarter-length victory over Sea Chanter in Sunday's $81,900 Miss Grillo Stakes at Belmont Park.

It was the second victory in as many turf starts for NAMASTE'S WISH, who struggled mightily in her first two career starts on dirt, losing both by a combined 37 1/4 lengths.

"The thought of running her on the turf has always been in the back of my mind," Mott said. "Because of her pedigree, I thought she would handle the dirt well, but all she did in those first two starts was fight over the dirt. Obviously, she has handled the grass well. We may consider running her in the Breeders' Cup before putting her away for the year."

In the Miss Grillo, NAMASTE'S WISH raced up close in fourth down the backside under Kent Desormeaux while Sherine set the pace and Sea Chanter stalked her. Sea Chanter, under John Velazquez, took the lead in upper stretch, while Kent Desormeaux was getting Namaste's Wish off the rail. NAMASTE'S WISH rallied past Sea Chanter outside the sixteenth pole to gain the victory.

RUTHERIENNE
, the 3-year-old daughter of PULPIT, moved to the very top of her class with a dazzling victory in the Grade I Del Mar Oaks going a mile and one-eighth over the seaside oval's firm turf course.

RUTHERIENNE arrived for her first visit to Southern California with her credentials firmly established. A winner six times from seven career starts, she was coming off consecutive stakes wins at Saratoga, Monmouth Park and Belmont Park in her last three trips to the post.

Drawing an outside post, jockey Corey Nakatani was able to move smoothly to the inside as the leaders took the field through the chute and around the first turn. Content to gallop along down the backstretch, they pair moved off the rail and to the outside with three furlongs left to run. Rallying out in the five path, Nakatani glanced over his shoulder at the top of the stretch and then ask the filly to run. She exploded with a turn of foot that was a sight to behold. She outkicked multiple graded stakes winner Valbenny to win by two lengths in a final time of 1:46 3/5, two ticks shy of the stakes record.

"I rode this filly with a lot of confidence," Nakatani said. "I knew what I had, and I had a lot of horse. I spoke to Christophe (trainer Christophe Clement) this morning and I've watched several of her races. She has a terrific turn of foot - and you saw that today. I had to time her run just right; not too late, not too soon. That's my job. What a special feeling to win a race like this - a Grade I. She's a special filly."

"I was a little worried when she had to go wide, but she's a little bitty thing with a big heart," said Jane Turner, assistant to winning trainer Christophe Clement. "The race set up pretty much the way Christophe  said it would. You don't necessarily want to be that far back but they were going fast and with that kind of pace it sets up for her. She'll do what you want her to do. She's a filly with an attitude. She's a little package of dynamite and she lets you know she's boss."

RUTHERIENNE has now earned $561,695 for her owner/breeder Virginia Kraft Payson.

August 10, 2007:

Virginia Kraft Payson LLC’s RUTHERIENNE continued with her impressive 2007 season Friday afternoon, but she got a fearless ride from jockey Garrett Gomez and a bit of luck to get the job done and win the 12th running of the Grade 3, $115,100 Lake George for three-year-old fillies at a mile and a sixteenth on the turf.

Stuck in traffic late in the race, the 3-year-old PULPIT filly was sent through a tight hole on the hedge to shoot in front of Classic Neel, then held on for a neck victory over Lady Attack in 1:40.34 on the firm course before Saratoga’s first Sunset Friday crowd of the season.

“She’s as game as she gets,” said trainer Christophe Clement, as  RUTHERIENNE recorded her sixth victory in seven career starts. “She’s great for this course because she is so handy. Garrett gave her a great ride. Sometimes, you get lucky; sometimes, you don’t.”

Luck usually rewards those who are prepared, and Gomez used his experience to make the winning decision to go up the hedge. He had saved ground, while Dashes N Dots set a pace of :23.13; :46.87; and 1:10.65, before surrendering the lead to Classic Neel.

“Just before we came off the turn, I wanted to make my way to the outside to give her a clear run,” Gomez said. “But they started to clog up and a couple started wheeling out. It looked like I was going to have to go 10-wide to get out there. I was actually saving a lot of ground and as I was saving ground, I kept picking up leaders and I was making it more difficult to wheel her out. My only worry was about the eighth-pole, when I had to come through on the last horse. It got a little tight for a second, but she never thought about it – I did. She’s a nice, little filly. She gives 110 percent every times she comes out there. I wish they were all like that.”

Clement said he would likely pass on the Grade 2, $150,000 Lake Placid here at nine furlongs on Friday, August 17 in favor of Belmont Park’s Grade 1, $200,000 Garden City at nine furlongs on the turf on Saturday, September 8.

It was a neck back to Sharp Susan in third. She was followed by Classic Neel, Silky Smooth, Good Mood, Miss Tizzynow, Red Burkin, Dashes N Dots, Bees and Awesome Ashley.

PULPIT DAUGHTER TOP FILLY AT FASIG-TIPTON JULY
A filly by PULPIT brought a final price of $385,000 to rank as the the highest paid price for a filly and the second highest price for all the yearlings offered in the 2007 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky July Selected Yearlings Sale!

The chestnut filly was brought to the sale by Nursery Place and was purchased by Murray Smith. A half-sisterto a winner, she was produced by the Tabasco Cat mare, Probable Storm, a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Summer Colony.

“She just exuded class,” Smith told the Thoroughbred Daily News. “She’s elegant, a lovely mover, perfect vet--every time I went to see her, she was gorgeous. The two-year-old market is a very thin market, and there’s not that many fillies like her. I’ve never owned a filly like her with this kind of pedigree. We’re not going to expect her to go :10.1 or :21 flat. She’ll work within herself and look pretty down the lane. She has residual value as a broodmare.”

June 30, 2007:
RUTHERIENNE
got a closer look at the Monmouth Park grandstand than she or rider Joe Bravo had probably intended as a result of interference in the stretch of the $150,000 Boiling Spring Stakes going a mile and one-sixteenth over the firm turf course at Monmouth Park.

The daughter of PULPIT rated near the back of the pack and moved to the outside coming off the final turn. She unleashed her late kick and joined the two leaders nearing the eighth pole. The trouble began when the inside filly Red Birkin carried out Sharp Susan, who in turn bumped and carried RUTHERIENNE out, slowing the momentum of her closing kick and pushing her out towards the outer rail.

At the finish, Red Birkin finished first by a neck over RUTHERIENNE, however, the stewards ruled that Red Birkin had interfered with Sharp Susan and they disqualified Red Birkin and placed her third. RUTHERIENNE was moved up to the win.

Bravo, who rode RUTHERIENNE for the first time, said, "I don't know what Jose (Lezcano, rider of Red Birkin) was doing or looking at. I had a ton of horse and she was closing down the outside with a full head of steam. Nothing against Lezcano, he's a good rider, but I guess in the heat of competition he messed up today."

RUTHERIENNE has now won five of her career starts and she has earned $252,635 for her owner/breeder Virgninia Kraft Payson. She is the second foal from the stakes winning Rahy mare, Ruthian.

June 30, 2007:
