GOLDEN VELVET WINS G3 SIXTY SAILS HANDICAP!
On paper it looked like it might be a two-horse race despite the presence of six other fillies and mares in the $200,000, Grade 3 Sixty Sails Handicap at Hawthorne Race Course Saturday afternoon. GOLDEN VELVET (SEEKING THE GOLD) and Tessa Blue were both coming out of the Grade 2 Rampart Handicap at Gulfstream Park, making them the only two runners exiting a graded event, and in the end, they indeed proved too tough for the others, with Golden Velvet grinding past front running Tessa Blue and eventually drawing clear for a  3 ½ length score.

Tessa Blue, under Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith set the pace after breaking sharply from the seven post and reached the quarter in a leisurely 23.97.  After getting to the half in an unpressured 48.31 it looked like the even-money favorite might be long gone. But Golden Velvet and jockey Eibar Coa, never more than a few lengths back, hooked Tessa Blue on the far turn and despite lugging through the stretch, GOLDEN VELVET proved to be much the best, in the mile and one-eighth event restricted to fillies and mares 3-years-old and up. The final time was 1:51.30

“I thought she had an excuse last time (The Rampart Handicap) and she really didn’t run her race,” said winning jockey Eibar Coa. “I was very confident today and I thought she was the horse to beat. My horse was sharp and I would say my horse was much the best even though she was playing around in the stretch.”

The winner was trained by Kiaran McLaughlin and saddled at Hawthorne by his brother Neil McLaughlin.

Kathleens Reel checked in third beaten more than six lengths by the winner, but more than eight lengths clear of fourth.

LORD SNOWDON WINS PAUMONOK HANDICAP!
Courtesy of NYRA

In four previous starts on Aqueduct’s inner dirt track, Michael Dubb and Sanford and Joscelyn Goldfarb’s LORD SNOWDON could do no better than three seconds from four starts.

Saturday afternoon, however, the 5-year-old gelded son of SEEKING THE GOLD made his 2008 debut a successful one by rallying from last on the Big A’s winter racing surface to win the 100th running of the $81,600 Paumonok Handicap for three-year-olds and up at six furlongs.

It was the eighth win in 26 starts for LORD SNOWDON, who had not raced since a lackluster fourth-place finish at foggy Philadelphia Park on November 26.

The layoff apparently did him good.

Man of Danger broke on top under jockey Stewart Elliott, setting a pace of :22.45 and :45.22 while pressed from the outside by Debussy and jockey Channing Hill on the fast track.

Meanwhile, LORD SNOWDON, his bay coat clipped for the winter, had jumped slightly when the gate opened, but quickly settled and steadily made up ground while running in the 2-path. When the front-runners hooked up in the stretch, jockey Ramon Dominguez hit his mount right-handed, and Lord Snowdon responded to deliver a one-length victory in 1:10.20.

The winner paid $10.20.

“If you didn’t know him, he seems to be going through the motions the first part of the race,” Dominguez said. “But when he gets to the three-eighths pole, he is absolutely ready to roll. He loves to win. He is smart enough to know what he has to do.”

January 31, 2008:
OVER UNDER
, the daughter of SEEKING THE GOLD, came running through the long stretch at Fair Grounds to win the 7th race, a maiden special weight going a mile and one-sixteenth over the fast main track.

OVER UNDER is a homebred racing for WinStar Farm LLC and she is trained by Dallas Stewart. She is out of the stakes winning and Grade 1 stakes-placed Seattle Slew mare, Princess Mitterand.

January 6, 2008:

GOLDEN VELVET
, the daughter of SEEKING THE GOLD, rallied through the stretch to dead heat for the win in the $150,000 Grade 3 Sabin Handicap going one mile over the fast main track at Gulfstream Park.

GOLDEN VELVET stalked the pacesetters and was on the move when she had to steady midway around the final turn. She regained her momentum and closed through the stretch to share the victory with Lady Marlboro.

“I really thought when we   got around them that she was going to win easy, but that filly is really game and my filly never really exploded," say Golden Velvet's jockey Eibar Coa.  "When we got back I saw it was taking so long, and I started thinking ‘I’ll take a dead-heat right now.’ I thought we had lost for sure.”

“She ran all right in one try on dirt in Dubai and has done very well in her three starts here, winning her ‘a other than (allowance)’ in her first start and running third in the Top Flight," said trainer Kiaran McLaughlin. "Right after the finish I was on the phone to Jimmy Bell (Darley racing manager in Kentucky) and I frankly thought we got beat, so we’ll be glad to settle for the dead-heat. Her next race will probably be the Rampart Handicap (G2) (Mar. 9).”

prevailed in a thrilling duel to defeat Sweetnorthernsaint by a quarter-length in the Grade 3, $400,000 Lone Star Park Handicap going a mile and one-sixteenth over the very sloppy main track at the Grand Prairie oval.

Sitting just off the leader's flank for the first half, Garrett Gomez asked BOB AND JOHN to commence his rally and had his head in front at the six furlong call. A stretch long battle loomed and the son of SEEKING THE GOLD would not let his challenger by, holding him at bay every step to win by a neck.

“My horse was doing it so easy and at the half-mile pole, I eased up to the leader, and then just before we turned for home I said, ‘Let’s go,’ and he ran well for us all the way down the lane,” said  Gomez. “Both horses were fighting really hard through the stretch and this little horse does everything so well. He’s got a big heart and he tries hard.”

BOB AND JOHN races for his breeder, Stonerside Farm and he is trained by Bob Baffert. He is the third foal and second stakes winner from the graded stakes winning Deputy Minister mare, Minister's Melody. Winner of the Grade 1 Wood Memorial last season at three, BOB AND JOHN has won or placed in eleven of his fourteen career starts and he has earned $996,330.

GET RICH QUICK
rallied late to capture the 4th race at Woodbine, a $71,500 allowance going a mile and one-sixteenth over the turf course rated good.

The son of SEEKING THE GOLD galloped along at the back of the field for the first six furlongs. He launched his bid but had eight lengths and eight other horses ahead of him. He weaved his way through the crowd, came between horses and got up in the final strides to win by a half length.

GET RICH QUICK is a homebred racing for Pin Oak Stud and he is trained by Malcolm Pierce. A half-brother to three stakes horses, he is out of the Strawberry Road (AUS) mare, Danka.

May 26, 2007:
CLAPHAM
took the field wire-to-wire and was never seriously challenged to win the 1st race at Monmouth Park, a maiden special weight  going a mile and one-sixteenth over the fast main track.

Making his third career start, the son of SEEKING THE GOLD took the lead going into the clubhouse turn and was never headed. He opened up through the stretch and was an easy three and one-half length winner.

CLAPHAM is a homebred racing for Melnyk Racing Stables, Inc. and he is trained by Todd Pletcher. He is the second foal from the Tabasco Cat mare, Chancery Lane, a half-sister to Breeders' Cup Sprint winner, Desert Stormer.

Marie and Aaron Jones's MAIZELLE proved gamest in the stretch as she retook the lead after being headed and held off Prop Me Up to the wire for a neck victory in Saturday's $60,000 Monmouth Beach Stakes at Monmouth Park.

Promenade Girl made it a three-horse photo as she closed late to be just a neck behind Prop Me Up at the end of one mile run in 1:36 1/5 over the fast main track.

MAIZELLE, who gave jockey Chris DeCarlo his third straight winner on the card, paid $7, $3.60 and $2.80 across the board as second choice in the field of seven fillies and mares. Prop Me Up, who also went off at 5-2 but had a few dollars more bet to win on her, completed the $20.40 exacta. Promenade Girl, who won the Grade 2 Molly Pitcher Breeders' Cup Handicap here last year, also went off at 5-2.

DeCarlo sent MAIZELLE up along the rail at the three-eighths pole and held the lead around the turn. Joe Bravo, however, got Prop Me Up rolling on the outside around the bend and took a short lead passing the quarter-pole.

MAIZELLE refused to give up in the stretch, and regained a short lead inside the eighth pole. She proved stubborn to the wire, never letting her rival gain another inch.

The winner, a 4-year-old daughter of SEEKING THE GOLD trained by Todd Pletcher, scored her fourth win in seven lifetime starts. She was coming off a victory in a similar stakes race at Aqueduct.

Coming into the stakes, DeCarlo had taken the eighth race on Chucker for trainer Richard Dutrow, and the seventh on Peerless for Pletcher.

"Down the lane I was riding her," DeCarlo said of MAIZELLE. "But she seemed to respond more to the filly on my outside (Prop Me Up) than to my urging. She was very game. She knew where the wire was."

May 16, 2007:
LONGLEY
made quick work of the field in the 8th race at Delaware Park, a mile and one-sixteenth allowance over the fast main track.

The 3-year-old son of SEEKING THE GOLD kept the pacesetter honest around the first turn and down the backstretch. He engaged the leader around the final turn, took over midway through and the race was over. He ran away through the lane and was more than nine lengths in front at the wire.

LONGLEY races as a homebred for Donald Adam's Courtlandt Farm and he is trained by Graham Motion. He is out of the stakes winning Personal Flag mare, Personal Girl.

May 14, 2007:
DIAMOND FEVER
made his first start on the turf and the son of SEEKING THE GOLD responded with a nearly two length win in the 5th race at Delaware Park, a mile and one-sixteenth maiden special weight over the firmly rated course.

Tracking the pace for the first six furlongs, he took the lead and was never seriously threatened to the finish.

DIAMOND FEVER is trained by Michael Matz and he races for his breeders, the partnership of Helen Alexander and Jon and Sarah Kelly. He is out of the multiple stakes winning and producing Halo mare, Radiant Ring.

May 9, 2007:
LORD SNOWDEN
, who was a winner on April 5 going a mile at Aqueduct, turned back to six furlongs with victorious results in the 7th race at Delaware Park over the fast main track.

LORD SNOWDEN sat four lengths away from the leader down the backstretch. He closed that gap with a strong move along the rail around the turn. Moving to the two path for the stretch run, he moved between horses, took the lead and went on to win by two lengths in a final time of 1:09 1/5.

LORD SNOWDEN had now won or placed in thirteen of his nineteen starts and he has earned $153,000.

May 4, 2007:
WANDERIN BOY, the son of SEEKING THE GOLD, made his 2007 debut and handed the previously unbeaten Half Ours is first career defeat with his four and one-quarter length victory in the $112,300
Alysheba Stakes going a mile and one-sixteenth over the sloppy main track at Churchill Downs.

Breaking sharply from post two, WANDERIN BOY went straight to the lead and was never seriously threatened. Galloping along under jockey Corey Nakatani, he left the field behind in the stretch under a hand ride to win easily.

“He’s a very athletic horse," said Nakatani. "He did it the right way. Nick (trainer Nick Zito) told me to put him on the lead. I said, ‘OK, that’s fine.” And that’s what we did. It’s a tribute to Nick and his team what they’ve done with the horse.”

“He ran a tremendous race," said Zito. "We were worried about Half Ours, obviously. Hopefully, that horse will stay in the sprint races.”

Asked about the next start on WANDERIN BOY's dance card for the year, Zito said,"“Well, naturally, the best thing to look at, if everything goes good, is the Stephen Foster right here. That would be great.”

WANDERIN BOY is a homebred racing for Arthur B. Hancock III. He has won or placed in thirteen of his sixteen lifetime starts and he has earned $722,215. He is the fourth stakes horse produced by the multiple stakes winning Pleasant Colony mare, Vid Kid.

MAIZELLE WINS HER STAKES DEBUT!
MAIZELLE
, the 4-year-old daughter of SEEKING THE GOLD, became his latest stakes winner with a spirited performance in the $64,950 Chieftan's Command Stakes going a mile and one-eighth over the fast main track at Aqueduct.

MAIZELLE was making her stakes debut after a win and a second in two allowance starts over the winter at Gulfstream Park. Away cleanly from post four, she settles nicely and tracked the pacesetter through the opening half-mile. She quickened on her own and took over turning for home. She dug in when the closers came calling and would not let her by, maintaining her half-length advantage to the wire.

MAIZELLE races for Aaron and Marie Jones and she is trained by Todd Pletcher. She has three wins and three seconds in her six career outings. A lovely chestnut with a bright white blaze, she is the second foal from the multiple stakes winning Storm Cat mare, Corona Lake. She was bred in Kentucky by Mr. and Mrs. Jerome Moss and was purchased by Mr. and Mrs. Jones for $925,000 at the 2004 Keeneland September Yearling Sale.

April 19, 2007:
PENSION
, the daughter of SEEKING THE GOLD, turned in a gritty performance to break her maiden in the 6th race at Aqueduct going one mile over the fast main track.

PENSION broke cleanly with the field and wanting the lead, dashed to the front and the battle was on. She went head and head with one challenger through the first six furlongs. Disposing of that rival, PENSION headed for home as a new challenger closed in. They hooked up for the length of the stretch but PENSION was not about to let her pass and she did not. Fighting all the way to the wire, PENSION won by a neck.

PENSION is a homebred racing for Phipps Stable and she is trained by Shug McGaughey. She is the second foal from the Grade 1-winning Easy Goer mare, Furlough.

April 5, 2007:
LORD SNOWDEN
, who had been second twice while sprinting on the inner track this winter, stretched out to a
mile over the recently opened Aqueduct main track and the son of SEEKING THE GOLD responded with an easy victory in the 2nd race, a $44,000 allowance.

Sitting just off the multi-horse speed duel for the first half, LORD SNOWDEN moved to challenge and the lead was his with a two furlongs to run. He kept right on going and was never seriously threatened, crossing under the wire nearly six lengths best.

LORD SNOWDEN has won or placed in twelve of his eighteen starts for the parnership of Dubb, Goldfarb, Joscelyn, Sanford H. Robbins LLC and P and D Kaplan Racing. He is trained by Anthony Dutrow. Produced by the Storm Bird mare, Weekend Storm, he was bred in Kentucky by W. S. Farish and Kilroy Thoroughbred Partnership.

March 29, 2007:
LOCHINVAR'S GOLD,
making her second lifetime start, became a winner, taking the 5th race at Santa Anita, a maiden special weight going six furlongs over the fast main track.

The daughter of SEEKING THE GOLD was away sharply and engaged in a three horse pace battle down the backstretch. It narrowed to two around the turn and into the stretch. They remained together until inside the eighth pole when LOCHINVAR's GOLD gained the advantage and steadily opened up to win by two lengths.

LOCHINVAR'S GOLD races as a homebred for Mr. & Mrs. Larry D. Williams and she is trained by Clifford Sise. Produced by the winning Lord at War (ARG) mare, Lady Lochinvar, she is a half-sister to recent graded stakes winner Master Command and the stakes-placed Pulpit filly, X Star.

ASPIRING,
the 3-year-old daughter of SEEKING THE GOLD, overcame being five wide around the first turn and four wide turning for home to finish third in the Grade 3 Bourbonette Breeders' Cup going one mile over the Polytrack at Turfway Park.

ASPIRING has now won or placed in three of her four career starts.

MARCH 17, 2007:
SWEET FERVOR
, the daughter of SEEKING THE GOLD, came flying through the stretch to win the $200,0000 Shirley Jones Breeders' Cup Handicap (G2) going seven furlongs over the fast main track at Gulfstream Park.

Away well from the inside post, there was a sextet of fillies who wanted the lead or to press the pace, so jockey Fernando Jara tucked SWEET FERVOR in behind that group for the first five furlongs. Midway around the final turn, he moved her off the rail and to the outside for the stretch run. She began to close the gap and when she switched leads passing the sixteenth pole, she uncorked a powerful turn of foot, flew past the leaders and had an open length on the field as she crossed the line. She stopped the clock in 1:22 3/5.

“She showed ability from the beginning and winning that little stake at Tampa Bay in her second start last year , but just didn’t go on in her training," said winning trainer Bill Mott. After the Fantasy, she just wasn’t traveling well and we decided to stop on her. She didn’t have any serious problems or need surgery. She just needed time. This was a big race for her today, but I’m not sure how far she wants to go. We’ll probably keep her in one-turn races up to maybe a mile for now, although that doesn’t mean she might not stretch out later."

SWEET FERVOR is a homebred racing for Kinsman Stable, for whom she has won four of her six career starts and has earned $209,700. Produced by the In Reality mare, Undeniably, she is a half-sister to the graded stakes horses Concerto, Wondertross, Granting and Illusioned.

HAPPY HUNTING
, the son of SEEKING THE GOLD showed incredible gameness today with his victory over multiple champion Judiths Wild Rush in the 3rd race at Aqueduct, a $55,100 allowance going a mile and seventy yards over the fast inner track.

HAPPY HUNTING stumbled badly at the start. He nimbly recovered and rushed up to join the leaders going into the clubhouse turn. Jockey Noberto Arroyo was able to get him to relax and let the pacesetters go on down the backstretch. He closed the gap around the final turn and was on even terms with a furlong to run. He continued on full of run and crossed under the wire a length and one-half best.

HAPPY HUNTING is a homebred racing for Phipps Stable and he is trained by Shug McGaughey. He is the first foal from the Grade 1 winning Easy Goer mare, Furlough. He has won or placed in twelve of his fourteen career starts and he has earned $274,504.

March 4, 2007:
TUMBAGA
split horses and rallied up the inside to win the 3rd race at Santa Anita, an allowance going one mile over the firm turf course.

The son of SEEKING THE GOLD was unhurried in the early going. Moving into contention at the top of the stretch, he had to wait for racing room. A seam opened between horses and he dashed through, passing those opponents and finding a rail run to the wire. He kept coming and got up to win by a neck.

TUMBAGA races for the partnership of Clifford Sise, Jr. and George Speelman and he is trained by Sise.

March 3, 2007:
WITHOUT DELAY
bravely split horses in deep stretch and went onto a thrilling victory in the opening race on the Santa Anita Handicap Day card, a maiden special weight coming down the hillside turf course going six and one-half furlongs.

The 3-year-old SEEKING THE GOLD filly was making her second career start and she showed great maturity while mired in traffic down on the inside. Placed midpack along the inside for the run down the hill, she was full of run, but stuck in tight as the field crossed over the main track and began the stretch run. She stayed bottled up until inside the sixteenth pole when she was able to find a way off the rail. One out, she closed like a rocket between horses and got up in the last jump to win by a nose.

WITHOUT DELAY races as a homebred for Wertheimer and Frere and she is trained by Richard Mandella. She is the second foal from the stakes winning Seattle Slew mare, Slow Down.

March 2, 2007:
GET RICH QUICK
rallied from off the pace to win the 6th race at Fair Grounds, a mile and one-sixteenth maiden special weight over the firm turf course.

The son of SEEKING THE GOLD, rated kindly a half dozen lengths off the pace in the early going. He was asked to pick up horses around the final turn. Taken out to the four path, he rallied through the stretch to gain the lead inside the sixteen pole and he went on to win by a length and one-half.

GET RICH QUICK is a homebred racing for Pin Oak Stud LLC and he is trained by Malcolm Pierce. Produced by the winning Strawberry Road (AUS) mare, Danka, he is a half-brother to multiple stakes winner, Bendanken.

SOCIETY HOSTESS
unleashed an astonishing turn of foot that carried her from last to first in the final eighth to win the Grade 3, $116,000 Monrovia Handicap going six and one-half furlongs down the hillside turf course at Santa Anita.

The newly turned 5-year-old daughter of SEEKING THE GOLD was a multiples stakes winner last season and started off 2007 with her first graded stakes victory. She trailed the field down the hill and across the main track. Moved to the far outside with a furlong left to run she exploded under jockey Garret Gomez. Gobbling up ground with every stride, she blew past the leaders with fifty yards to run and flew under the wire a length best.

"I've seen a lot of races on this course, and I've never seen a horse do that," said Ron Anderson, Gomez's agent, Ron Anderson.

“She’s got a lot of class," said Gomez." Everything I ask her to do, she does. Today, she broke good, but we weren’t in a hurry. She wasn’t pulling, so I knew they were going fast up front. She doesn’t do anything wrong and she just does everything I ask her to do. She’s just a nice filly.”

We thought she would be mid-flight," said Nicholas Bachalard, assistant to trainer Christophe Clement. "They went very fast if the fractions are right, and I think there’s a bit of give in the ground, too. That was a very good turn of foot. She’s a very good filly. She only lost twice this year (2006) and she never lost more than a length in the two races she lost.”

SOCIETY HOSTESS is a homebred racing for Moyglare Stud Farm LTD. She is the second foal from the undefeated Storm Cat mare, Touch of Truth, a half-sister to Grade 1 winner, Twilight Agenda. She has won or placed in eleven of her fifteen career starts and she has earned $354,797.
